Don't Let Someone Else's Content Ruin Your Credibility

Recently, I was engaged in a conversation with a friend and business associate about not letting “someone else’s content ruin your credibility.”

What do I mean?

Simply put, be careful when you comment on other people’s posts and share their information. While it is very important (and highly recommended) to help others by commenting and sharing information across your network, it can be very damaging to your own credibility and reputation if the information you are sharing is bad; especially if you are just starting out.

Let’s put it into perspective…

Have you ever been given information about a movie, a restaurant, a book or something else only to find out that the information was way off base or totally wrong? How did you feel about the person or the source of that information? Would you feel comfortable going back to that same source the next time you wanted/needed similar info? Would you stake your reputation on it?

Think about that as you read, comment, and share information with your network. Putting positive comments of agreement on posts with bad information or that are poorly written can hurt your credibility; and sharing that information with your network can also be very detrimental to you. Furthermore, it does not help the author of the post either.

Now, I am also not suggesting that you make negative comments or try to embarrass someone who writes a bad post. This tactic may also reflect negatively upon you from a credibility and professionalism standpoint. Personally, I look at it as an opportunity to reach out and help someone and possibly build a relationship with them.

Credibility is important when it comes to doing business whether you are looking for people to join your team or dealing with clients (new, existing, or prospective). People join people and work with those they “know, like and trust,” so it is very important to understand how to build your brand without losing credibility. What Kind of Person Are You?

What kind of person are you?  Just be honest with yourself and think about the following:

-Do you really focus on helping others or is your focus really on helping yourself?

-Do you really have a positive attitude or do you just want others to think you do?

-Are you looking to "get-rich-quick" or are you really dedicated to building a business?

-Do you take responsibility for where you are or do you blame others?

-Have you stopped making excuses or is your lack of time, money, etc. still the issue?

- How do you respond when you hear someone else's testimony...belief or doubt?

There are so many more questions that we should answer honestly for ourselves 

when determining whether being an entrepreneur is really right for us.  When I 

started my company a few years ago, I had to really consider these questions as 

well as others that related to my mindset, purpose, attitude, discipline, focus, and 

goals (short and long-term).  Once I honestly had all of the right answers to those

questions, that's when I left the Fortune 500 company I was working for to start 

my own business.

So how did you answer those questions being honest with yourself?  Are you truly in

a place where you have the proper mindset, attitude, and expectations to succeed as

an entrepreneur or independent business owner?  While I could probably dedicate an

entire blog to each of those questions, let's focus on the last one for a second....

How do you respond when you hear someone else's testimony...belief or doubt?

Lately, I have heard so many people wasting their time focusing on trying to

determine whether someone else's testimony is true or not.  They can't "believe"

that this lady lost it all in real estate and then found great success in network

marketing; or that this very successful network marketer was previously a drug

addict; or that a former waiter could identify a concept that would revolutionize

the industry and make him millions; or that a couple of guys who struggled for

years in MLM could create a system that would make themselves and many others

financially secure for the rest of their lives; or that two guys who prefer shorts

and t-shirts over business suits would create a network that paid out over

$1,000,000 in commissions to its members in just over 3 weeks...

How do you respond when you hear those testimonials?  Are they too good to be

true?  Do you believe them, but don't think they could happen to you?  Do they 

energize you because you see what's possible?  Do they make you take action?

How you respond tells a lot about your mindset.  For example, a few days ago I 

wrote a testimonial about a relationship I built that resulted in someone joining my 

team in a business that had been "pitched" to them previously by someone who did

not take the time to build a relationship with them.  In the testimonial I also shared 

how I had given the person a quick "blueprint" training on how to get off to a good 

start with building the business, and within a few hours she had already enrolled 5

Most of those who read the post, especially those familiar with the platform, knew

the main point I was making with this testimonial (although if one pays close 

attention there are a number of lessons in there); however, some comments made

me immediately wonder about the mindset of the people making them.  Those 

comments seemed to focus on whether they "believed" someone could actually

recruit 5 people in just a few hours.  Therefore, I thought that this would be a great

"teaching" opportunity that someone out there might be able to benefit from.

The testimony was not about someone's ability to recruit 5 people in a few 

hours, but if it were why would that be hard to believe?  I'm sure it wouldn't be

for the person that has recruited 5 or more people into an organization in a few

hours; or for the person that believes they can.

Although the testimony was about building relationships being the "right way"

to connect with other members on that platform, it is understandable that some

people may have never recruited 5 people into a business (let alone in a few hours),

so maybe they spent some time focusing on that part of the story.  Well here's the 

difference in a person's mindset.  While one person will think that was "hard to do"

and give themselves reasons why they can't do it; another person will think "I can 

do that" and focus on figuring out what they need to do in order to get it done.

In their mind.  That's where many people go wrong when they are trying to succeed 

in business.  They focus on why they "can't" do something or why it would be 

"difficult" to do something as opposed to having that belief and confidence in 

themselves that it can be done and that they can do it.  The testimonial did not go into

the "blueprint" training details, the relationship she had or didn't have with those she

recruited so quickly, or even the particular opportunity itself, which all played a part

in her fast start.  Depending on your mindset, however, you may not have even 

realized that the information was available.

So we conversed here and there over the last week and today while we were chatting she was "spammed" by someone from my business (clearly not someone on my team)!  After exchanging a few instant messages regarding our experiences with spammers, she asked me about the company.  I told her that if she called me I would talk to her about it...and she did a short time later.

By the time we got off the phone she had not only joined my team, but I had also already given her a brief training and a "blueprint" with a plan of attack on how to get off to a good start with building the business.  I don't know how long it took for her to bring her first person in (maybe half an hour), but I do know that just a couple of hours later she had already enrolled 5 new people!

David Wood Talks Empower Network Ethics

When a business or program EXPLODES onto the scene like the Empower Network has, there are bound to be people who have negative things to say about it. Whether it is because they don't understand the system, believe it works, are using it as a "ploy" to get some attention, or just don't like the way the founders present themselves, these folks have decided to spend their time speaking negatively about the Empower Network.

So as a member of the Empower Network, I've decided to simply share with you some facts. As of this morning (November 28, 2011), the Empower Network had 9,329 members that had received $1,159,523.20 in commissions paid in just 4 weeks. Don't Quit

As a young boy I memorized a poem that my parents had hanging on the wall. I don't remember how old I was, but I know I was very young, and I recall taking every opportunity possible to recite this poem "by heart." Little did I know at the time, that it would be a "mantra" that I'd live by and continue to share with others for the rest of my life...

Don't Be Afraid to Dance!

As a member of the Empower Network's "Inner Circle" I have access to some great audio training calls done by David Wood and David Sharpe leading up to the launch of the Empower Network.  There is so much information contained in each recording that every time I've listened to them I've been able to pull some more information out that is beneficial to my team and me.  To listen to David Wood and David Sharpe speak about their experiences can't help but motivate you, even if you are already doing well, to do even better.  The more you listen to them, the more you understand how much they truly want to help everyone be successful and why they created the Empower Network!  So what does that have to do with dancing?

Now to continue, I was listening to a segment today (again) where David Sharpe discusses how over 99% of people are so self-absorbed that they can't see past themselves; but once they realize that "it's not all about them" their lives will change.  He proceeds to tell a story about how he used to go to this "dance club" and would put on a fresh outfit so that he could be cool, looking good and "comfortable" in his own skin.  However, he would stand around and watch people dance and even though he thought it "looked fun," he wouldn't go out on the dance floor.   Why? Fear.  He didn't want to be laughed at.  He was so self-absorbed that he thought everyone would be paying attention to him and laugh and reject him, so he stood on the sidelines.  At some point he figured out that a lot of other people were just as self-absorbed as him and were thinking the same thing!  He then had an "epiphany" and realized that it wasn't about him, which resulted in him being able to let loose, have fun, dance, and have a good time!  He was able to overcome the fear of rejection and no longer worried about what other people would think.

That fear of rejection is what plagues many people in the network marketing industry today.  David Sharpe finally took a "leap of faith" and went out on the dance floor.  He then took this same principle and applied it to all aspects of his life, including his business.  Having faith gave him confidence and relieved the anxiety he had of doing business presentations.  He took the risk and started doing webinars and conference calls and guess what?  People actually showed up and kept showing up!  He actually "bombed" his first few presentations, but was able to develop his skill of overcoming fear and started applying other information into his presentations to make them successful.

The moral of this story is "Don’t Be Afraid to Dance!"  Take the leap of faith and get out on the dance floor.  Nobody cares and if you do your thing, they may even just respect you for taking the risk.  Whatever your "dance floor" is, just go for it.  If you bomb or fail the first time, just keep at it and don't quit.  Success in your business takes staying in the game, having a vision, having a dream, and sticking to it!

Positive Thinking

Jerry is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!" He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant.

The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?" Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.

I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.

"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested. "Yes, it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life."

I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gun point by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.

I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. “The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live."

"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked. Jerry continued, "...the paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man.'

I knew I needed to take action." " What did you do?" I asked. "Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. 'Yes,' I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Bullets!' Over their laughter, I told them, 'I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.'"

Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything.

What Are We Missing?

Washington DC, Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007.

The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:
The violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:
A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 minutes:
The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money, but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

Two days before, Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each.

Joshua Bell playing incognito in the Metro Station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.

The questions raised: In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made...

I connect with a number of people in the network marketing industry on a daily basis.  Some are struggling network marketers or business people I am trying to help or assist in some way; some are "successful" and we often share stories or bounce ideas off of one another; and others are just cool people I know that I have (or am building) relationships with.  It's great to be able to connect with people from all over the world, that come from all walks of life, and are all a part of this network marketing industry.

There are so many network marketing companies to chose from and quite often we see people who are "struggling" bounce around from business to business hoping the next opportunity will be "the one" that is going to make them rich!  Obviously there are a number of reasons why someone leaves one opportunity for another, but in network marketing it is more often than not related to money.  In fact, money is the reason that many people quit the entire network marketing industry.  People don't make enough money and they don't make it fast enough, so they quit.  The reality is, however, that most network marketing company compensation plans are not designed for you to make a lot of money quickly and be able to sustain it over a long period of time.  You may be with a very good company, but you know that it is going to take you 3, 6, 12, 24, 36 or even more months to really start seeing significant income.  So what do you do in the meantime?  For many, that means staying broke, getting frustrated, and being bitter while they wait for the time to come when their commission checks reach a level of significance.  But not for members of the Empower Network!

Breast Cancer Survivor and Attitude

If you've ever spoken with me or read some of my earlier posts you know that I strongly believe that having a positive mindset and the right attitude go along way in achieving your goals.  Well today at Church service we had a special guest speak to us about being a breast cancer survivor and how important it was for her to have the right mindset and a positive attitude while also surrounding herself with positive people as she fought the cancer.  In her words, staying positive has "healing power" and helps you get through things when you want to give up.  She finished by sharing a very powerful poem that I am going to share with you now:

TITLE: ATTITUDE

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. "Well," she said, "I think I will braid my hair today." So she did and she had a wonderful day!
